Assistive technology is an umbrella term that includes assistive, adaptive, and rehabilitative devices for people with disabilities and also includes the process used in selecting, locating, and using them. Assistive technology promotes greater independence by enabling people to perform tasks that they were formerly unable to accomplish, or had great difficulty accomplishing, by providing enhancements to, or changing methods of interacting with, the technology needed to accomplish such tasks.

Text-to-speech software makes it possible to listen to any text on the computer. This is a simple idea, but one with powerful possibilities.

Words that are printed rather than spoken have the ability to exclude many people. Difficulties with reading may arise for many reasons, but are likely to be particularly persistent for those affected by dyslexia. Prolonged experience of difficulty in reading can be damaging. It is likely to affect self-confidence, belief in one’s ability to learn and opportunities to feel successful.

So it is vital that access to the printed word is guaranteed through text-to-speech software from as early as possible in education. We must not wait for failure before offering help.
